CABINET MEETING HELD ON SATURDAY 09 MAY 2020

The Cabinet met yesterday under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister, the Hon. Pravind Kumar Jugnauth. The highlights of the deliberations are as follows:

1. Cabinet has agreed to the introduction of the COVID-19 (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill into the National Assembly. The object of the Bill is to amend a number of enactments to cater for the impact of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), the infectious disease commonly known as COVID-19, for matters connected, consequential or related thereto.

2. Cabinet has agreed to the introduction of the Quarantine Bill into the National Assembly. The object of the Bill is to repeal the Quarantine Act, which dates back to the year 1954, and   re-enact a reformed and modern appropriate legislative framework with a view to providing more appropriate measures for the prevention and spread of communicable diseases. The new legislation has been rendered necessary on account of the impact of the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV), the infectious disease commonly known as COVID-19.

3. Cabinet has taken note that Mauritius Telecom has developed a new web link for the online application of Work Access Permits on beSafeMoris website. The online application for private sector organisations is operational since Friday 08 May 2020. Applications for the public sector organisations as well as for individuals and self-employed persons would be operational shortly.

Cabinet has also taken note that 34 CAB Offices would assist individuals and self-employed persons who do not have internet facilities, to apply online for the Work Access Permit. However, in order to ensure social distancing, they would have to attend the CAB Offices in alphabetical order.
