COVID-19: Active cases stand at 339 and 55 patients already discharged

• As at date, the number of active local cases stands at 339 and a total of 55 patients have been discharged. Two COVID-19 related deaths have also been registered, bringing the death toll due to COVID-19, since the outbreak of the pandemic in Mauritius, in March 2020, to 12.

• Since 05 March 2021 to date, the number of positive COVID-19 cases identified are as follows:

– 340 cases through contact tracing exercise and COVID-19 testing centres;

– 39 in quarantine centres; and

– 13 through random testing.

• The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Jagutpal, made this statement, this evening, at the daily press briefing of the National Communication Committee on COVID-19, at the Treasury Building in Port Louis. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP), Mr Krishna Jhugroo, was also present.

• A total of 736 PCR tests were carried out today and four positive cases from the Chamarel village were revealed through the contact tracing exercise.

• More than 800 random PCR tests were performed, yesterday, at Rivière du Poste, Rivière des Anguilles, Tyack, Camp Fouquereaux, and Curepipe.

• More than 3 000 persons have been placed in quarantine centres and some 60 000 PCR tests have been carried out since the first week of this month.

• The medical staff is more trained as compared to last year, and more facilities as well as equipment are available this year.

• A sanitary corridor has been put in place at the Neonatal ICU of Victoria Hospital. Staff from other hospitals have been mobilised to take care of the babies while the staff of the Neonatal ICU Victoria Hospital stay in a quarantine facility.

• Several measures have been taken for the quarantined dialysis patients, namely special meals, additional medical staff for monitoring, and allowing a patient’s family member to stay with him/her.

Extension of lockdown

• The lockdown has been extended up to Friday 30 April 2021 until 20 00 hrs.

• The Temporary Restriction of Movement Order has been amended and all sanitary precautions must be observed.

• Every person in the Red Zone must have a Work Access Permit (WAP) first to be able to apply for a Special WAP so as to enter or leave the Red Zone to go to work.

• Valentina, Petit Camp, Jumbo area, Carreau Laliane, part of Closel, and part of Bonne Terre have been removed from the Red Zone.

• As at date, some 10 782 WAP applications have already been delivered, catering for around 220 000 employees of both the Public and Private sector. Moreover, some 2 674 persons have been fined for non-wearing of facemasks and 7 127 for breach of the Temporary Restriction of Movement Order. These are considered as serious breach of law.
