COVID-19: Health Minister urges healthcare workers to take maximum sanitary precautions

Following the continued Contact Tracing Exercise linked with the Souillac Hospital, amounting to 1300 tests carried out today, one additional dialysis patient has been detected COVID-19 positive. In addition, 200 random testing have been carried out today in the South region, and the Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle.

In total, four dialysis patients have been tested COVID-19 positive.

The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Jagutpal, made this announcement, this evening, at the daily press briefing of the National Communication Committee on COVID-19, at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis. Dr Catherine Gaud was also present.

• 75 dialysis patients and the staff of the Souillac Hospital are all admitted in quarantine centres. These patients are receiving both dialysis and COVID-19 medical treatment.

• The Souillac Hospital is temporarily closed to the public, except for dialysis patients who are receiving their treatment there and essential services are being offered to the public in the adjacent Youth Centre.

• The reconverted Youth Centre will be operational from Monday to Saturday, as from 08 00 hrs to 18 00 hrs, and on Sunday and public holiday, as from 08 00 hrs to 17 00 hrs. An ambulance has been allocated to the Youth Centre for any emergency case.

• The Minister urged the residents of the locality to avoid coming to the Youth centre for medical services, except for emergencies, and to instead visit Area Health centres.

• Moreover, the Health Minister reiterated his support to all health workers who are working relentlessly to protect the population in this crisis situation and urged them to use all the protective equipment provided by the Ministry to be able to work in safe conditions for themselves and their patients.

• He emphasised that by nature of their work, they are at more risk for exposure to the Coronavirus and should act responsibly to avoid becoming a vector of the COVID-19 during their interactions with their patients.

• Results from PCR tests carried out yesterday revealed 11 new local cases, this morning, as follows: eight through the Contact Tracing exercise linked to the Nursing Officer at the Souillac Hospital in the dialysis department, two cases concerning two inhabitants of the South region, detected in a COVID-19 Testing Centre and one case is an inhabitant residing in the Red Zone, detected in the COVID-19 Testing Centre at the Victoria Hospital, in Candos.

The COVID-19 situation so far is as follows:

221 positive cases detected through Contact Tracing Exercise and in COVID-19 Testing Centres; 35 detected in quarantine centres; and 13 through random testing exercises. A total of 39 patients who are considered to have recovered from the Coronavirus, have been discharged. Another 230 COVID-19 positive patients are being treated in treatment centres.

• As for Dr Gaud, she informed that among the 230 patients under treatment against COVID-19, only three of them are showing symptoms of the Coronavirus and are being closely monitored by the medical team.

• She also underlined that the quarantine stay aims at detecting any positive cases and halt any propagation among the public and urged all those admitted in quarantine centres to act responsibly and abide by the prevailing rules.

• She cautioned that one contaminated person can potentially create a whole cluster of COVID-19 contamination.

• She also noted that in the case of the staff of the Souillac Hospital, only one of them had been vaccinated. So far only one third of our healthcare workers have been inoculated, and it is critical that they all act accordingly to protect their own health, that of their family, the population and those patients who are at more risks due to their fragile health conditions, she said.
