COVID-19: The locality of Vallée-Pitot declared Red Zone

The locality of Vallée-Pitot, in Port-Louis, has been decreed as Red Zone by the high-level committee on the COVID-19 so as to limit the propagation of the virus in that area, protect the health of the inhabitants and limit their movements. Testing will be ongoing in that area and residents are invited to undergo testing.

• The Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, made this announcement, this afternoon, at a press briefing of the National Communication Committee on the COVID-19, at the New Treasury Building in Port-Louis. The Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Mr Krishna Jhugroo, was present.

• Dr Jagutpal recalled that a first case was detected on 12 May 2021 in Vallée-Pitot and that person was infected through the Bonne Terre cluster. He indicated that on 17 May 2021, 57 persons underwent testing in that area while 12 persons were tested on 20 May 2021, and on 23 May 2021, 28 persons were tested.

• The Ministry of Health and Wellness, further highlighted Dr Jagutpal, has registered one positive case, from Bon Accueil, during routine testing effected last evening on health personnel. The person is a member of Contact Tracing teams. The required health protocol has been implemented as it is the case when positive cases are detected.

• In addition, the Minister pointed out that three positive cases were detected yesterday. The first person, a resident of the village of Arsenal, was tested positive following a PCR test at the COVID-19 Testing Centre of the SSRN hospital. She is an employee of a resident of an apartment block, Dreamton Park (Block A) in Quatre-Bornes, who was also detected positive following a Contact Tracing exercise. The third person, a resident of Vallée-Pitot, works at the same place.

• Testing, informed Dr Jagutpal, is ongoing at Dreamton Park, Block A, with results expected by latest tomorrow. The Minister therefore appealed to those residents of Dreamton Park to remain in their homes and to self-isolate themselves once they have undergone testing until results are announced. The Candos Laboratory has sampled 368 tests which are all negative, he added.

• DCP Jhugroo spoke about practical details to delimit the area of Vallée-Pitot. The same conditions that have been applied to existing Red Zones such as Rivière des Anguilles, Tyack; Camp Diable; and Bonne Terre, will be in force in Vallée-Pitot, he said. The propagation of the virus has been effectively curbed when areas have been declared Red Zones, he emphasised.

• Six road blocks will be set up in the locality of Vallée-Pitot and people entering that zone will need to be in possession of a special permit and only people who work in essential services will be granted that permit, he emphasised.

• The Police Force, stated the DCP, has been deployed since this afternoon to ensure the smooth running of operations on field. Arrangements will be made with organisations to offer facilities in the region where need be and inhabitants are invited to cooperate with the Police who will support them in this difficult situation, he emphasised.
