Government provides financial incentives to support local artists

• The Ministry of Arts and Cultural heritage is implementing a COVID-19 Artists Support Plan 2021 for the cultural and creative sectors so as to mitigate the effects of the confinement following the recent resurgence of the COVID-19 pandemic.

• This announcement was made this afternoon by The Minister of Arts and Cultural Heritage, Mr. Avinash Teeluck, at the seat of his Ministry in Port-Louis.

• The Plan comprises schemes in various artistic disciplines, namely music, books, production of short stories, painting, sculpture, film making, photography and other forms of art. It aims at providing financial support to local artist who are going through a difficult time following curtailment on gathering and public/ cultural events.

• The Plan highlights Government’s commitment to uphold the creative and cultural sectors. Artists are also eligible for the Self Employed Assistance Scheme.

• Through the COVID-19 Artists Support Plan 2021, registered artists are given the opportunity to further develop their artistic talent and create new art productions such as a book, a song or a film, and be remunerated accordingly.

• A selection of the best work per category will be granted an additional financial aid following the decision by a competent panel.

• The theme this year is ‘Mauritius’, namely its people values, culture, and history. The artworks and production would be used as promotion material to market the country as a cultural destination.
