Part of Vallée-des-Prêtres will be declared as a Red Zone area as from 20 00 hrs tonight

This announcement was made by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Dr Kailesh Kumar Singh Jagutpal, this evening, at a press briefing of the National Communication Committee on COVID-19, at the Treasury Building in Port Louis.

The Deputy Commissionner of Police (DCP), Mr Krishna Jhugroo, was also present on the occasion.

The Minister underlined that this decision has been taken following the detection of COVID-19 positive cases in the area. Forty–eight positive cases are linked to the Terre Rouge Cluster, with 17 in Vallée-des-Prêtres, 10 in Cité Martial, 13 in Terre Rouge, one in Coromandel, one in Vallée Pitot, two in Pamplemousses, and four in Port-louis.

Minister Jagutpal provided details as regards positive cases of COVID-19 during the recent days, namely:

On the 29 June 2021, an employee of a hotel designated as a quarantine centre who tested positive to COVID-19 was sent to a treatment centre and a contact tracing exercise was initiated.

On the 30 June 2021, 11 persons of the same family, who were in contact with the hotel employee, tested positive. Following this, their area of residence, Morcellement Foondun, was declared as a Red Zone since yesterday.

On 30 June 2021, four positive cases were detected at Jeetoo Hospital, one in Terre Rouge, two in Port-Louis, and one in Coromandel.

Thirty–one positive cases were detected on 01 July 2021, among which nine were detected in flu clinics and 22 through a Contact tracing exercise, and are all linked to the Terre Rouge cluster.

Speaking about the vaccination campaign, the Minister affirmed that the country is progressing in its programme. So far, more than 574 000 persons have received their first dose and 263 000 their second dose.

He recalled that his Ministry is offering all the necessary facilities and services for free vaccination in all vaccination centres across the country.

The Minister also urged all citizens to abide by all the laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to the resumption of activities, while stressing that they must continue to observe all the health safety measures and protocols to avoid any propagation of the virus in the community.

For his part, Deputy Commissionner of Police (DCP), Krishna Jhugroo, recalled that part of Terre Rouge, namely Morcellement Foondun, has been designated as a Red Zone area since yesterday.

As for the newly designated Red Zone area in Vallée-des-Prêtres, he informed that several road blocks and vehicle check points will be set up at various points to control access and movement in the area.

As regards residents of Chitrakoot, the DCP stated that the Police will carry out a survey and will issue a special permit to them so that they are able to circulate in the area. This permit will have to be presented at each check point, he added.
