Pre-Budget Consultations: Consumer Associations submit proposals to the Minister of Finance

· Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, Dr. Renganaden Padayachy, had a meeting this afternoon in Port Louis with representatives of Consumer Associations, as part of the pre-budget consultations.

· Some 12 representatives from various associations, including the Mauritius Consumer s’ Association (ACIM), the Association for the Protection of the Environment and Consumers, the Mauritius Tax Payer’s Association, among others, were present.

· In a statement after the meeting, ACIM Secretary General Mr. Jayen Chellum, gave an overview of the various proposals made to the big moneyman by the various associations.

· The priority with the COVID-19 pandemic, according to him, is an increase of about 7 % to 8 % in the national budget for the health sector. That, he says, so that he can make up for the increase in drug prices.

· It pointed out that tax on certain food items such as vegetables, frozen or canned goods also needs to be reviewed. It also asks the government to review the phone call break between the various local operators.

· Other proposals include: increasing purchasing power of consumers during this pandemic; revising some infrastructure projects to save money and invest in projects that are more responsive to the current situation; and equality education opportunities for using digital tools for those who can’t afford to buy technology.

~ Mr. Chellum also encourages the government to review some expenses, continue to encourage good governance, and remain vigilant against corruption.
